Can You Spot the Difference?
Recently, I came across a bag that looked remarkably familiar. My first reaction wasn’t great.
I had the idea for La Pochette in 2016. We then spent more than two years developing the fabric and refining every detail before launching La Pochette, including the Sweat Bag, in 2019. So seeing this was difficult.
Yes, theirs was a little larger and the hanging cord was on the other side. But the overall design, the front zipped pocket, the hanging loop, the mesh interior, felt remarkably familiar. Then I started looking at what was different, because most of those differences you can’t see in a photograph.
Why We Created the Sweat Bag
The original idea was simple. I wanted to make it easier to fit a workout into a busy day without carrying a separate gym bag. Most gyms and studios provide towels, shampoo and other amenities. What you really need with you is your workout kit and a few post workout essentials. And I knew that if I already had my kit with me, I was far more likely to make it to that class.
So the Sweat Bag was designed to live inside the bag you were already carrying. But that created another problem: what happens after the workout?
We didn’t want the bag itself to become the problem. That question shaped much of the development that followed.
The Differences You Can't See
Weight and size mattered. The Sweat Bag was always designed to disappear inside another bag while still holding everything you need for a workout. That’s why we kept it compact and why it weighs just 80g.
The fabric mattered too. We chose recycled polyester, made from post consumer plastic waste, rather than virgin polyester. The outer fabric is water resistant, antimicrobial and deodorising, because we didn’t want moisture or odour from used workout kit affecting the rest of your bag.
But perhaps the most important difference is the lining. Both bags have mesh interiors. They may look similar, but they behave very differently.
Ours is a water resistant, quick drying performance mesh that is also antimicrobial and deodorising. So when you empty out today’s sweaty kit, you can pack tomorrow’s fresh kit straight back in. The alternative uses a woven mesh that absorbs moisture and doesn’t have those treatments.
Of course, it still needs to be washable. Both bags are machine washable, but we developed our fabric to withstand repeated washing and still look good.
Then there are the details. We chose water resistant zips and bespoke silicone zip pulls designed to withstand chlorine and saltwater. We added a hanging loop for the locker or shower. The front pocket created somewhere separate for jewellery, toiletries and other post workout essentials. We later designed our travel bottles specifically to fit inside it.
And we now make the Sweat Bag in more than ten colourways because we believe something you carry most days should look as good as it performs and be something you actually want to carry.
None of those decisions happened by accident.
Side by Side
Put the two bags together and the visual similarities are obvious. But the specification tells a different story.

What You Can't See Matters
Looking at the two bags side by side reminded me how easy it is to judge a product by what we can see. But so much of what goes into a product is invisible: the materials chosen, the performance of the fabric, how it behaves after repeated use and the reason behind every detail.
So, strangely, the disappointment I felt when I first saw the other bag eventually became something closer to pride. Pride in the more than two years we spent developing ours, but above all, pride that we created a product that genuinely works, lasts and continues to solve a very real problem for our customers.
Because what makes a product different isn’t always what you see at first glance. Sometimes, it’s everything you don’t.
