Whether through the food we eat, clothes we wear or how we choose to shop, we all strive nowadays to live in a more sustainable and environmentally responsible way - so why should going to the gym be any different?
It’s an often touted but still staggering fact that by 2050 the planet’s oceans are expected to contain more plastic than fish – do we really need so much single-use plastic in our lives?
It’s time to exercise in a smarter and more socially conscious way…
Boutique gyms Terra Hale and 1Rebel are at the forefront of a movement to ensure our personal wellness doesn’t cost the earth.
1Rebel reckoned its gym goers had been using 37,000 single-use plastic bottles a year, so decided on an all-out ban. It replaced single-use plastic bottles with reusable stainless-steel containers across all its studios.
Plastic protein shake cups were also switched to biodegradable cups and straws, and 100% recyclable and reusable kit bags were introduced in all changing rooms.
Terra Hale is similarly single-use plastic free and to make your visit with them just a little bit more eco-minded, the whole venue is powered by energy generated when clients work out on their unique eco-bikes. The gym stores the power created during the sessions and uses to keep the lights on during off-peak hours – power to the people! It also uses recycled materials throughout and even stocks eco loo paper!
Dump plastic bags
Of course, consciousness about disposable plastics isn’t just the preserve of our favourite studios. We can all do our bit by ensuring we take a green approach to how we carry out our personal fitness.
A simple, and smart, start is to do away with the disposable plastics bags dispensed in the changing room to hold your kit post work out. Bad for the environment and totally insufficient as a watertight holder, the solution is to replace that single use affair with a bag with longevity, designed specifically for the purpose.
Our Sweat Bag not only replaces them, its actually made from recycled plastic bottles, so you can feel doubly proud to tote it around the gym. Store it in your everyday bag and you can be sure that wet or sweaty kit remains sealed in its water resistant compartment and not seeping into your personal tech. Not only does it protect your belongings stored outside but also your kit inside, its antibacterial material is defending your favourite kit from deterioration. And if that wasn’t enough, its antibacterial properties ensure that any eau-de-gym remains in the bag – so you’ll have to shout about that gym win yourself.
So there you have it, a bag which offers intelligent function whilst saving the planet one plastic bag at a time. And did we mention how beautiful it is?
