The Rise of Social Wellness Clubs: Where Heat, Cold and Community Meet
Social wellness clubs have started appearing everywhere recently. Not gyms, not spas, these spaces have tapped into a need for connection.
They might include heat rooms, cold plunges, guided breathwork classes or sound healing. What they all have in common is that they’re designed to be communal spaces, somewhere people go not only to feel better physically but to connect, unwind and be part of something.
So What Exactly Is a Social Wellness Club?
A social wellness club is a community space combining the physical benefits of heat and cold with a social aspect.
Othership in Toronto and New York is probably the most well known. First launched in Canada, it expanded to locations in New York, with their Flatiron district location boasting the largest sauna in New York City.
It mixes a huge communal sauna with ice baths and breathwork, all designed as a guided journey. The founder’s aspiration was to create an alcohol-free social space, promoting genuine connection amongst users. The brand’s many glowing five star reviews praise how welcoming and inviting it feels as well as the physical and metal benefits.
Arc in London's Canary Wharf opened in 2025 and offers free flow or guided sessions. Featuring the UK’s largest sauna, ice baths and a sleek lounge, designed for people to take breaks or stay afterwards, the focus is as much on connection as it is on recovery. Within months, it had waiting lists. A second site planned for Marylebone.
Shoreditch &Soulopened in May 2025 in a former Victorian textile warehouse in East London. It features a 40-person Aufguss sauna (designed in collaboration with the British Sauna Society), ice baths, an alcohol-free bar, DJ sets and plant-based dining. The space is called ‘The Sanctuary’ and their offering includes yoga, qi gong, sound baths, sauna raves and even a co-working space.
Rebase Recovery in London takes a broader approach, offering not only sauna and ice baths but yoga, breathwork and shared classes that create a sense of community, alongside options like vitamin infusions and hyperbaric oxygen.
Berlin is always early to adopt cultural shifts. ANTI in the central Mitte region, describes itself as Anti isolation, for community and blends Pilates, HIIT, contrast therapy and social sessions, while Sauna Social Club Berlin hosts events fusing sauna rituals, cold water and live music giving the experience a creative, communal feel.
432 is preparing to launch in Amsterdam, created by three wellness industry veterans. The concept combines instructor-led breathwork, multi-sensory aufguss rituals in the sauna, and cold plunges. The name 432 references 432Hz, a frequency known for its natural resonance with the human body which their curated soundscapes are tuned to.
Particularly relevant in cities, where the scale and number of people mean connections can be hard to find, social wellness clubs bring together rituals with a sense of belonging.
Why People Are Drawn to Them
A Mental and Physical Reset
The combination of heat and cold helps circulation, eases tension and gives that clear-headed feeling people crave during busy weeks. It is also one of the quickest ways to switch off the noise of the day.
They Encourage Proper Rest
Phones go away and the focus is on your body. Breathing, sweating, plunging into cold, all allow things to slow down. There are not many places in a city that let you do that in a structured and uplifting way.
They Replace Alcohol-Centered Socialising
You still meet people, catch up or make new connections, but you leave feeling energised rather than depleted. This is incredibly appealing to anyone who wants connection without the late night or the next-day regret.
Othership even describes itself as an alternative to going out. You get the atmosphere, the music, and the sense of being part of something, but in a way that supports your health instead of undoing it.
They Create Community
When you share something slightly uncomfortable, like cold water or intense heat, you bond. This shared experience makes talking easier and after a few visits, it becomes part of a weekly rhythm and becomes a place where you feel safe to be yourself.
How They Fit Between Gyms and Spas
Where traditional gyms focus on training and spas focus on quiet relaxation, social wellness clubs sit in the middle. They give you the physiological benefits of recovery, the emotional benefits of calm, and the uplifting feeling of being around others.
They are also designed beautifully. Warm wood, gentle lighting and natural materials create spaces where you want to stay. The design is intentional because it shifts the experience from something functional to something atmospheric. Details like cedar-infused air and warm ambient lighting immediately signal you are entering a different kind of space.
The Generational Shift Behind the Growth
Across the UK, Europe and North America, more people are looking for lifestyle choices that help them feel better without overcomplicating things, the simplicity of a sauna and plunge ritual appeals.
There is also a clear generational shift. People in their twenties and thirties are drinking less, people in their forties and fifties want ways to manage stress and sleep that feel natural and enjoyable and almost everyone wants connection that feels less superficial.
Social wellness spaces offer structured environments where meeting new people feels natural rather than forced.
It is no surprise that clubs like Arc have waiting lists, Othership continues to expand and creative wellness spaces are appearing in more cities around the world. We predict that this is not a trend that will fade quickly, it will become a new way of socialising.
What This Means for Everyday Routines
What is interesting is how naturally these clubs fit into modern life. You can go before work or after a gym class. You can meet a friend and make it your catch-up or you can even go alone and still feel part of something.
They offer a simpler way to weave wellness into your week without pressure or performance, just a ritual that gives you balance.
The practical side matters too. What do you do with your damp towel and swimsuit afterwards? A waterproof Wet Bag or Aqua Bagkeeps everything contained with no leaks, no smells and no plastic bags stuffed into your tote, allowing you to move from the heat of the sauna back into your day.
